Relay Control System
Understanding and
Function Relay
Relay is a switch that is operated
electrically and is an electromechanical component consisting of 2 main parts,
namely the electromagnet (coil) and mechanical (a set of switches). Relays use
Electromagnetic Principles to drive Switch Contacts so that with a small
electric current (low power) they can conduct electricity with a higher
voltage. For example, a relay that uses a 5V electromagnet with a current of 50
mA is able to move the armature relay (which functions as a switch) to conduct
220V 2A electricity.

Relay Working Principle
Basically, Relay consists of 4 basic
components, namely:
1. Electromagnets (Coils)
2. Armatures
3. Switch
4. Spring
The following is a picture of the parts of the
relay:

Relay Contact Points consist of 2 types, namely:
▪ Normally Close (NC), namely the initial condition before being
activated will be in the CLOSE position
(closed)
▪ Normally Open (NO), namely the initial condition before being
activated will always be in the OPEN position (open)
Based on the picture above, an Iron Core is
wrapped around a Coil which functions to control the Iron. If the Coil is given
an electric current, an Electromagnetic force will arise which will then
attract the Armature to move from the previous position (NC) to the new
position (NO) so that it becomes a Switch that can conduct electric current in
its new position (NO). The position where the Armature was previously (NC) will
be OPEN or not connected. On when
there is no electricity, the Armature will return to the Initial position (NC).
The coil used by the relay to pull the contact point to the closed position
generally only requires a relatively small electric current.
The Meaning of Pole and Throw in
Relay
Because Relay is a type of Switch, the terms
Pole and Throw used in Switch also apply to Relay. The following is a brief
explanation of the terms Pole and Throw:
▪ Pole : The number of contacts owned by a relay
▪ Throw : The number
of conditions that a Contact has
Based on the classification of the number of
poles and the throw of a relay, relay can be classified into:
▪ Single Pole Single Throw (SPST): This class of relay has 4
terminals, 2 terminals for the switch and 2 terminals again for the coil.
▪ Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT): This class of relay has 5
terminals, 3 terminals for the switch and 2 terminals again for the coil.
▪ Double Pole Single Throw (DPST): This class of relay has 6
terminals, including 4 terminals consisting of 2 pairs of switch terminals
while the other 2 terminals are for coils. DPST relay can be used as 2 switches
controlled by 1 coil.
▪ Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT): This class of relay has 8
terminals, including 6 terminals which are 2 pairs of SPDT relays controlled by
1 (single) coil. While the other 2 Terminals are for Coil.
Apart from the Relay Class above, there are
also Relay with more than 2 (two) Poles and Throws. For example 3PDT (Triple
Pole Double Throw) or 4PDT (Four Pole Double Throw) and so on.
For more details regarding Classification of
Relay based on the number of Poles and Throws, please see the image below:

Relay Functions and Applications
Relay functions that have been commonly
applied to electronic equipment include:
1. Relay are used to carry out Logic Functions
2. Relay is used to provide a Time Delay Function
3. Relay are used to control high Voltage Circuits with the help of
low voltage Signals.
4. There is also a relay that functions to protect the motor or
other components from over voltage or short circuit.
History of Relay
Joseph Henry, during his life he tried to make
electromagnets. From his experiments, he discovered the electromagnetic
phenomenon of self inductance. He also discovered inductance independently of
Michael Faraday, although Faraday was the first to publish his findings. Henry
developed the electromagnet into a practical device. He created the first
electric bell (specifically a bell that can be rung remotely via an electric
wire, 1831) and electric relay (1835). To honor his services, scientists
confirmed his name, Henry, as an international unit. Henry's work on
electromagnetic relays was the basis of the practical electric telegraph
invented by Samuel FB Morse and Sir Charles Wheatstone.

3. Verbal and Nominal Sentences
Clues: Verbal sentences (V)
are those, which start with a verb.
Non-verbal sentences start with a noun or pronoun, or
with derivative nouns. Verbal sentences
consist of a verb + subject + object or adverbial phrase. The subject and object can be either nouns or pronouns. A
nominal sentence (N) also known as the
equational sentence is a linguistic term
that refers to a nonverbal sentence (i.e. a sentence without a finite verb).
As a nominal sentence does not have a verbal predicate, it may contain a
nominal predicate, an adjectival predicate, and in Semitic languages also an
adverbial predicate, or even a prepositional predicate.

4. Active and passive
Clues:
Active sentence is a sentence where the subject performs the action of the
verb. For example, John kicked the ball. ("John" is the subject.
"John" is acting as the verb "kick." Therefore, this is an
active sentence.) An active sentence is the opposite of a passive sentence. In
a passive sentence, the action of the main verb is done to the subject. Passive voice occurs when the person or thing that performs an
action is not the grammatical subject of the sentence. Instead, the person or
thing that receives the action is placed before the verb. Passive sentences are
formed using the verb to be combined with a past participle.

SISTEM KONTROL RELAY
Pengertian dan Fungsi Relay
Relay adalah Saklar yang dioperasikan secara listrik dan
merupakan komponen
Elektromekanikal yang terdiri dari 2 bagian utama yakni
Elektromagnet (Coil) dan
Mekanikal (seperangkat Kontak Saklar).

menghantarkan arus listrik di posisi barunya (NO). Posisi dimana Armature
tersebut berada sebelumnya (NC) akan menjadi OPEN atau tidak terhubung. Pada
saat tidak dialiri arus listrik, Armature akan kembali lagi ke posisi Awal
(NC). Coil yang digunakan oleh Relay untuk menarik Contact Poin ke Posisi Close
pada umumnya hanya membutuhkan arus listrik yang relatif kecil.
Arti Pole and Throw Pada Relay
Karena Relay merupakan salah satu jenis dari Saklar, maka
istilah Pole dan Throw yang dipakai dalam Saklar juga berlaku pada Relay.
Berikut ini adalah penjelasan singkat mengenai Istilah Pole and Throw :
▪ Pole :
Banyaknya Kontak yang dimiliki oleh sebuah relay
▪ Throw : Banyaknya kondisi yang
dimiliki oleh sebuah Kontak
Berdasarkan penggolongan jumlah Pole dan Throw-nya sebuah
relay, maka relay dapat digolongkan menjadi :
▪ Single Pole Single Throw (SPST)
: Relay golongan ini memiliki 4 Terminal, 2 Terminal untuk Saklar dan 2
Terminalnya lagi untuk Coil.
▪ Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT)
: Relay golongan ini memiliki 5 Terminal, 3 Terminal untuk Saklar dan 2
Terminalnya lagi untuk Coil.
▪ Double Pole Single Throw (DPST)
: Relay golongan ini memiliki 6 Terminal, diantaranya 4 Terminal yang terdiri
dari 2 Pasang Terminal Saklar sedangkan 2 Terminal lainnya untuk Coil. Relay
DPST dapat dijadikan 2 Saklar yang dikendalikan oleh 1 Coil.
▪ Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT)

1. Relay
digunakan untuk menjalankan Fungsi Logika (Logic
Function)
2. Relay
digunakan untuk memberikan Fungsi penundaan waktu (Time Delay Function)
3. Relay
digunakan untuk mengendalikan Sirkuit Tegangan tinggi dengan bantuan dari
Signal Tegangan rendah.
4. Ada
juga Relay yang berfungsi untuk melindungi Motor ataupun komponen lainnya dari
kelebihan Tegangan ataupun hubung singkat (Short).
Sejarah Relay
Joseph Henry, semasa hidupnya ia mencoba
membuat elektromagnet. Dari percobaannya itu, ia menemukan fenomena
elektromagnetik induktansi diri.
